Preface:

The Castaways Sailing Club has provided a monthly racing program for many years.  All are welcome to participate.  This year we have taken special efforts to coordinate the racing schedule with events held by other clubs to foster as much interclub racing as possible and encourage the greatest participation possible.  We also hope to have those who just would like to enjoy a day on the water to come out and sail with us.

The Program:

Castaways race events are a mixture of formal races/regattas, such as the Castaways Cup and the Fellowship Cup, and seven more “informal” races we call the Castaways Ocean Race Series.  The schedule included in this NOR has lists all Castaways races as well as a list of other races in the area so you can also plan to participate in races hosted by other clubs.  This document will otherwise focus only on those races that will constitute the Castaways Ocean Race Series.  This year we plan to have a race committee boat on station to start, set turning marks, and take finish times for participants for as many of the races as possible.  We also plan to have race raft ups after each even.

Race Courses:

The race course for the day will be announced ½ hour in advance of the race starting sequence. Attached is a chart indicating potential mark locations to make the course communication easier.

Start Times:

All races will start at one o’clock unless notification of change a minimum of one week in advance of the scheduled race.  Therefore, the race start sequence will therefore be 5 minutes before the start time and all yachts should be checked in prior to that time.

Classes:

For all individual boat races there will be three classes scored; PHRF, JAM, and Multi Hull.

All yachts must submit a handicap issued by SE Florida PHRF or MORC or ORC.

If any handicap documentation is issued before 2021 the owner/skipper must certify no changes have been made to the vessel after that time.

Scoring:

Scoring will by based on the low point scoring system should more than one race be held on a given day.  We will attempt to keep total race time to about 2 hours.  Individual “awards” will be provided for the winners of each race.  This year there will be overall series awards.

Fees and Waiver:

The fees for the 2023 season (which includes only the Ocean Series races designated in the overall sailing schedule) will be $100 for the seven races.  Make checks payable to Castaways Sailing Club and send them to Bob Gebbia, 131 Bowsprit Drive, North Palm Beach, FL 33408.

All participants must submit a waiver with the entry fee.  The waiver is attached. The signed waiver and fees must be received before the first race you participate.

YOU CAN PARTICIPATE IN INDIVIDUAL RACES. Participation for an individual race is $20 and the fee and waiver is required to be received before the race.

After Race Events:

There will be a raft up at the end of each race to share experiences, fellowship, and provide awards. We will raft up at the club mooring near Sailfish Yacht Club.

I hereby agree to all sailing instructions for this race, which I have read and understood.

I hereby warrant that my yacht will be certified, equipped and handled in accordance with those instructions; and that she will have all required equipment aboard.  I understand that I am solely responsible for the safety of my yacht and her crew and that it is my sole responsibility whether to start or to continue the race.

The skipper/owner shall be responsible for the conduct of his or her crew and/ or guests. In the event of breach of conduct, sportsmanship, destruction of property, or failure to comply with the request of any race officer, committee member, or agent of the Castaways Sailing Club, Inc. the skipper/owner will be held responsible and his/her yacht shall be subject to protest and disqualification.

As a condition of participating, my crew and I acknowledge the following: That sailing is an activity that has an inherent risk of damage and injury associated with it. We have read 2021-2024 “The Racing Rules of Sailing Part 1, 4” Decision to Race, and hereby acknowledge and agree that we are participating in this event entirely at our own risk.

We further acknowledge and agree that neither the organizing authority, nor the race committee, nor their members, will be responsible for (a) any damage to the entered yacht or my other property, or (b) any injury to myself or my crew, including death, sustained as a result of the participation of myself, my crew, and the yacht in this event. I hereby waive any rights I may have to sue the race organizers (organizing authority, race committee, protest committee, host club, sponsors, or any other organization or official) with respect to personal injury or property damage suffered by myself or my crew as a result of our participation in this event, including any claims arising as a result of the negligence of the race organizers, and hereby release the race organizers from any liability for such injury or damage to the fullest extent permitted by law. I have taken all necessary steps to ensure that myself and my crew, and the entered yacht are adequately prepared for all possible contingencies, including appropriate safety equipment as may be required by law or that a prudent seaman would consider advisable.

The undersigned, individually and for the entire yacht crew, specifically release and forever discharge the Castaways Sailing Club, Inc., its members, officers and directors and all persons connected directly or indirectly with the operation of the race from any liability for liable, slander, loss, damage, negligence, harm, injury or death suffered by any of us which may occur during or as a result of participation in the race.

I grant Castaways Sailing, Inc. or its agent the unconditional and perpetual right to publish and broadcast the names and images of the skipper, crew and yacht prior to, during and after any of the races in these series.
