October 4-5, 2024
Notice of Race
The Castaways Sailing, Inc. invites you to participate in the 20th Annual Castaways Cup Regatta: A two-day point-to-point regatta from Palm Beach Inlet to St Lucie Inlet & return dedicated to fun, and friendly racing!
Rules:
The regatta will be governed by the rules as defined by The Racing Rules of Sailing for 2021-2024 Including US Sailing Prescriptions.
Eligibility:
The regatta is open to all sailing yachts “ready for sea” in all aspects. It is up to the Skipper to insure suitability of the Yacht for racing. Safety gear and proper preparation cannot be overstated in offshore racing.
Classes:
There will be a PHRF class, a JAM (jib and main) class and a “Gunkhole” Class. This year we have introduced a “Gunkhole” Class that is intended for those boats that are not experienced racers but would like to participate, if just for the fun of sailing to Stuart with us. A valid PHRF rating from US-PHRF-SEF is required with your application. If you do not have a current certificate, PHRF-SEF can turn around your application quickly. Now is a good time to apply and avoid any last minute issues. Yachts submitting an application without a current rating will be assigned a rating from US Sailing National handicap averages.
Scoring:
The rules of racing Appendix A4.1 “Low Point System” will be utilized in the Castaways Cup which is sponsored by the Castaways Sailing Club, with the exception to the scoring of the boat that finishes first in a race. The boat that finishes first will be awarded ½ point; second place 2, points; third place, 3 points and so on. Ties for the Castaways Cup Awards will be broken by the best corrected time between yachts for both days sailing.
Sail Numbers:
Entrants without sail numbers will not be allowed to protest any finish line time.
Friday, October 4 - Skippers Meeting:
A mandatory skipper’s meeting is planned for Friday, October 4, 2024, at 6:30 pm. The meeting will be held by ZOOM. The purpose of the meeting is to pass out the Sailing Instructions and answer any questions. Below are two marinas near the Palm Beach Inlet that are reasonably priced if needed.
Riviera Beach Municipal Marina Lake Park Harbor Marina

Fax: (561) 845-8197 www.lakeparkmarina.com
Transportation can be provided for guest sailors upon prior arrangement with the Race Chairman.
Last minute Race cancellation due to weather or unforeseen circumstances will be sent by e-mail to the address on file, or by the phone number on the application, by 6:00 pm Friday evening, and will be posted on http://www.castawayssailing.com/ website.
Saturday, October 5th:
Race Committee communication the day of the race will be on Channel 72. Please use Channel 68 for boat to boat communication. The start will be a pursuit start beginning approximately one-quarter mile north of the Lake Worth/Palm Beach Inlet. The first start will be at 10:00 AM, using the Committee Boat G.P.S. time. All auxiliary engines must be shut off no later than 5 minutes before your starting time and remain off until your finish. Any boat seen by the race committee running its engine WITHIN FIVE MINUTES OF THEIR START time will be protested and a 720 degree penalty shall be imposed on the offending boat to be completed while under sail after starting.
Depending upon wind and wave conditions there will be one of two types of starts. (1) There will be a starting line between the committee boat and a floating red ball mark. Or (2) A Beach start utilizing a floating red ball and an orange flag on the beach. The goal is to have all boats finish the race at reasonably the same time thereby giving everybody a chance for “first in the pool” honors.
In the unusual case of lack of wind, the race committee may delay the start until the breeze arrives. The race committee will announce new times over the VHF radio channel 72 to all competitors. After waiting a reasonable time for the wind to pick up the race committee may elect to move the starting line north and attempt a start. In this case the race will be a normal fleet start by class and not a pursuit start. The starting sequence and flags will be the same as we will use for the Sunday start. Announcements will be made via VHF radio channel 72. Please note that the use of Channel 72 is a convenience and you should come close astern of the Committee Boat for official instructions and checking in.
Assumption: if the winds/waves are excessive, then a beach start is probable. If the winds are low, then we will have a Race Committee boat and a start ball that can be moved north. Details will be discussed at the skippers meeting.
Course: Saturday’s race will go from a starting line approx. 1/4 mile north of Palm Beach/Lake Worth Inlet to a finish line between “R”2, St Lucie Entrance Buoy and the end of the Jetty. Course length is 24 nm.
Finish: The finish line will be the entry buoy government mark for St Lucie Inlet. You should finish between the buoy and the first red mark at the end of the rock jetty. There is a time limit for the race. If no boats finish before 1800 the race is abandoned. Any boat finishing within the time limit in its class makes it a race for that particular class. All boats will record their finish time and submit the time to the race committee after arriving on shore. It is recommended to note your position relative to any other boats you are finishing near.
Sunday, October 6th:
Sunday/ Start: The Starting line will be just south of the St. Lucie Inlet Channel around ½ mile offshore. The start will be a traditional Class Start in accordance with RRS 26. Class flags and starting sequences will be announced at the Skippers Meeting October 4th. The first signal marking the beginning of the race will be a five (5) minute sequence beginning at 10:00 hours by the committee boat’s G.P.S. time.
All auxiliary engines must be shut off five (5) minutes prior to your class start or else you will be protested and risk a 720 degree penalty turn after the start of your class. The starting time and location may be changed due to weather. Announcements will be made from the committee boat on Channel 72 the morning of the race. The intended starting order by class will be: PHRF, JAM, Gunkhole.
Boats not in their start sequence shall remain 200 yards, or greater, clear of the start line. 3
Sunday: The Course and the Finish: From the starting position at St Lucie to the finish at R2 Palm Beach/Lake worth Inlet, is the reverse of course from Saturday. The course length will be 24 nm. There is a time limit of 8 hours for the race. Any boat finishing in its class within the 8 hour time limit makes it a race for that class. The finish line is between R2 and the pump house. You should record your own finish time and submit it to the race committee by emailing your time to: kirsten.delany@gmail.com It is recommended to note your position relative to any other boats you are finishing near.
Awards:
Prizes will be awarded to the top finishers in each class for each day depending on the number of entrants: 1st for 3 entrants; 1st and 2nd for 5 entrants; 1st, 2nd and 3rd for 7 entrants; 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th for 10 or more entrants. Classes may be split by handicap if we have over 14 entrants in a class. The coveted Castaways Cup Award will be presented to the best overall combined finishes. Any ties will be broken by combining the corrected times of both races. The yacht with the best combined time will be declared the winner.
Saturday and Sunday’s racing awards will be presented at a “Five O’Clock Somewhere” on Wednesday, October 23rd at a place and time to be determined.
Entry fees:
Entry fee includes skipper’s materials and a dinner ticket for the Castaways Cup Dinner at Manatee Pocket on Saturday, October 5th.
Racing Vessel Entry Fee: $125.00 After Thursday September 26th $140.00
Crew Dinner Fees for Reservations at the Saturday: $40.00 each
We must have an accurate headcount and names of crew members and guests who are planning to attend the Castaways Cup Dinner so that enough food can be ordered, and we can notify the restaurant. All venues have a cutoff date for altering the meal count. No dinner reservations will be honored after Wednesday October 2, 2024.
Note: if a Skipper submits an application for the race and adds, deletes or changes a guest on his or her application he needs to contact Kirsten Delany at kirsten.delany@gmail.com.

Hotel Reservations:
Attendees may make hotel reservations directly with Pirates Cove Resort and Restaurant. 772-287-2500. A block of reduced rate rooms have been reserved, see pricing below. You may make your reservations by advising the reservations clerk that you are sailing in the Castaways Sailing Club group.
The current discounted rates and total cost of the room for the night is as follows: The total for the night including the room rate of $182.75, resort fee of $20 and taxes $23.32 is $226.07 for poolside standard rooms.
The total for the night including the room rate of $204.00, resort fee of $20 and taxes $25.76 is $249.76 for waterfront standard rooms.
Dockage/ Mooring Reservation:
Boats under 40 feet in length are encouraged to use Manatee Pocket’s managed mooring field. You can make reservations here:
https://www.martin.fl.us/ManateePocketMooringField
Note that it is $30 per night and insurance is required. For boats over 40 ft in length we have been informed there is an anchorage spot available outside of Manatee Pocket by hells gate just north. For further information please reach out to the HarborMaster at 1-772-320-3144. Please remember that each boat is responsible for making their own reservations.
There is no launch service to get crew to and from boats. We will arrange for a boat to perform this task at certain times on Saturday and Sunday.
There is some dock space for those in power boats since the depth at the hotel’s slips will not accommodate sail boats. We can probably get a slip for the committee boat at the dock if we commit early. There is a possibility of dockage on the “end cap” at the hotel for sailboats but it is about $275 per night.
Look forward to seeing you!
Have a GREAT Regatta!!!
